The Tar Heels (8-0) were nearly unstoppable on offense, extending their lead to 33 points, and they shut down the Huskies (6-1) for long stretches. The Tar Heels also scored 23 points off UConn turnovers. With Latta running the point, the Tar Heels seemed to score at will as their up-tempo attack ran into little interference. The Tar Heels had five steals and five blocks in the first period, and when they weren’t swiping the ball, they were swiping at it, disrupting just about everything the Huskies tried to run. By the time Christina DeWitt’s layup ended the run, the Tar Heels’ lead was at 19 points, 28-9, with just under 8 minutes left in the half.

No. 1 Duke Defeats Virginia Tech 77-75

DURHAM, N.C. - No one has scored more points for Duke than Johnny Dawkins. Nearly 20 years after his college career ended, he settled for one big assist. Sean Dockery made a heave from about 40 feet with less than a second left after some advice from the associate head coach, giving the top-ranked Blue Devils an improbable 77-75 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski drew up a play for burly center Shelden Williams, but Dawkins saw Dockery was virtually unguarded. He urged the senior guard to make himself available for Josh McRoberts’ pass, if Williams should be covered.

That’s exactly how it happened.

I knew I had plenty of time, Dockery said. I had confidence in the shot and I knocked it down.

It conjured up memories of Christian Laettner’s shot at the buzzer that beat Kentucky in the 1992
NCAA tournament, when he took a pass from Grant Hill and swished a jumper from near the top of the key. Much as Hill did, McRoberts set the play in motion with perfect aim.

I dont know what I was thinking,” McRoberts said. “It was kind of surreal to watch.”

The frantic finish denied the Hokies a stunning upset after they rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final 4 1/2 minutes. Coleman Collins capped the comeback by tipping in a miss by Zabian Dowdell, and after conferring with TV replays, the referees put 1.6 seconds back on the clock for the Blue Devils (7-0).

He received the ball just over halfcourt, then took one quick dribble — one less than Laettner needed 13 1/2 years ago — and launched his shot from the “Coach K Court” decal near the sideline.

It rattled in, sending the Cameron Crazies into a frenzy and giving Virginia Tech (5-3) its second stunning loss in two days. On Saturday, Marcus Vick and the Hokies football team lost the ACCs first championship game to Florida State.

“Im very proud of our basketball team, Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg said. We did a lot of things that gave us a chance to win the basketball game. We just got beat by a great team on a great shot.

Shelden Williams dominated throughout and finished with 21 points and 19 rebounds, while J.J. Redick bounced back from first half foul trouble to add 18 points. Yet, with the game on the line, Dockery was the one who came through.

He finished with a season-high 19 points — the first time he’s been in double figures all season — and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Of course, the final one was the most important.

It felt real good leaving my hand, Dockery said. Not to sound cocky or anything, but I knew it had a chance. In practice, Im never the one hitting those shots. I guess it makes me about 1-for-30 now.”

Collins led the Hokies with 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting, and Dowdell added 15.

“We just kept fighting,” Dowdell said. “I was real optimistic. I just felt like something good was going to happen to our team.”

This one was tight all the way, featuring 17 lead changes and 12 ties. The Blue Devils finally took control with — what else? — with stingy defense, and Redick and the rest of the guards finally found range from outside.

Virginia Tech was down 63-61 when Gordon got stripped by Dockery, and Dukes Lee Melchionni beat everyone down court for what was going to be an uncontested layup. Gordon hustled down in an attempt to stop the shot, but he simply shoved Melchionni out of bounds instead of going for the ball.

An intentional foul was called, giving the ball to the Blue Devils following two free throws from Melchionni. Redick made the most of the extra possession by making his first 3-pointer, and suddenly, the Hokies were down seven.

It quickly got worse. Collins worked inside for an easy basket before Duke pulled away, thanks to Williams putting back his own miss, Redick using a nifty behind-the-back dribble to free himself for an open look and Dockery converting a pair of free throws.

That made it 74-63. On the sideline, Greenberg told his team to stay patient and to come back one defensive stop at a time.

That’s what we hang our hat on, Dowdell said. As long as we keep doing that well, we’ll be all right.

Congressional Reports: Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001 The attacks of Sept. The report describes a series of missed opportunities and government gaffes going as far back as 1998, when the intelligence community first heard that bin Laden was plotting an attack in the United States. Senior U.S. military officials were reluctant to use U.S. military assets to conduct offensive counterterrorism efforts partly because they believed the intelligence community was unable to provide the intelligence needed to support military operations, the report states. As a result, the FBI missed the opportunity to task a uniquely well-positioned informant — who denies having any advance knowledge of the plot — to collect information about the hijackers and their plans in the United States, the report notes. Also, as far back as 1998, the intelligence community received reports that a member of Al Qaeda was planning operations on U.S. targets, including a scheme to hijack U.S. planes. A fall 1998 intelligence report says that Al Qaeda was considering a new attack using biological toxins in food, water or ventilation systems of U.S. embassies. And a spring 1999 intelligence report stated that bin Ladens supporters in Afghanistan were experimenting with enhancing conventional explosives with radioactive material, the report notes. While the intelligence community had amassed a great deal of valuable intelligence regarding Usama bin Laden and his terrorist activities, none of it identified the time, place and specific nature of the attacks that were planned for Sept. Another couple of blogs cite UN press releases to try to debunk what we saw on the ground with our own eyes; In fact, most of those press releases debunk themselves: go to the UN’s official site and check for yourselves. When the press release does mention some action on the ground, it leaves vague who actually did it — implying that the UN did it — or who made it possible for the UN to do it, e.g., US helicopters, C-130s, LCACs, trucks, aircraft carriers, cash and personnel. We understand from UN contacts that UN Undersecretary-General Jan Stingy Egeland will hold a major press event on January 26, the one month anniversary of the quake-tsunami, at which he’ll announce all that the UN has done. Our reporting on the UN’s reaction to the quake and tsunami is based on personal observation and experience, and on talks with dozens of aid workers — NGO, USG, foreign government, local government, and UN — involved in the relief effort.

While Moses and Aaron are entrusted with the task of extracting Israel from the clutches of meekness, despondency, apathy, and spiritual and emotional lethargy, all of which are conditions of the Egyptian slavery, Israel’s role in the Exodus process is admittedly a passive one. And while this commandment demands a remarkable show of bravery and confidence, in that Israel is instructed to make a public show of the slaughter of the sheep, a sacred object of Egyptian worship, Israel is otherwise silent while the natural world that they know seems to implode around them.* So it should come as no surprise that the people’s will is unstable, that at the first sign of trouble they are of the conviction that their lives are in peril and that the whole Exodus has been for naught. As they stand before the sea with the formidable Egyptian army swiftly bearing down upon them, the people of Israel remind Moses that they were opposed to the whole enterprise from the very beginning, that it would be better to serve Egypt than to do in the desert (14:12) . The people complained of Moses, saying ‘What will we drink?’ And he cried out to God, and He showed him a tree, and he cast [it] to the water, and the water sweetened; In the first of a series of three thematically related episodes, the Children of Israel wander aimlessly into the desert and despair when, after several days, they can still find no drinkable water. -ne Εχουμε επεξεργασμενες σε dvd παλιες ταινιες super8mm που ειχε τραβηξει ο πατερας μου,χωρις ηχο,μερικες ασπρομαυρες,οι πιο πολλες ξεθωριασμενα εγχρωμες.Σε μια απο αυτες με ξανθες μπουκλες,ασταθες περπατημα και κωλο φουσκωμενο απο την πανα,κραταω με χαρα μια πλαστικη μπαλλα με το εβλημα του ΠΑΟΚ.Κανενας στην οικογενεια μου δεν ειναι ποδοσφαιροφιλος και κανενας δεν ειναι ΠΑΟΚτσης,οι δε γονεις μου δεν μπορουσαν να θυμηθουν ποιος μου ειχε παρει αυτη τη μπαλλα.Σε αλλες ταινιες παλι με ασταθες βασισμα παπιας αλλα και μεγαλυτερος κραταω οπλα-παιχνιδια.Και παλι κανενας στη οικογενεια μου δεν ηταν στρατιωτικος ή λατρης του στρατου.Μαλιστα ο πατερας μου περιεγραφε με μελανα χρωματα τη θητεια του,ενω η μητερα μου θεωρουσε τα επαγγελματα μπατσου και καραβανα αναξια δια την οικογενεια μας.Ξεκινησα διαβαζωντας εκεινα τα αλλησμονητα κομιξ ‘Κρανος’,’ Εφοδος’,΄Î”ρασης’ που περιεγραφαν τις περιπετειες Βρετανων,Αυστραλων και Αμερικανων στο Β.Π.Π.Οργανωνα τους φιλους μου σε ομαδες και παιζαμε πολεμο με παθος.Μαλιστα αν καποιος δεν δεχοταν τα ρεαλιστικα σεναρια που επεβαλλα τον αρχιζα στις σφαλιαρες!!!Μεγαλωνοντας σταματησα να παιζω πολεμο,σταματησαμε να παιζουμε πολεμο και σταματησαμε να αγοραζουμε στρατιωτακια και παιδικα οπλα.Βγαιναμε,αρχισαν τα πρωτα γκομενικα.Τα κομιξ τα ειχα ηδη πεταξει(πραγμα που τωρα το μετανιωνω γιατι ειναι ψιλοδυσευρετα) και τα λεφτα πηγαιναν σε εξοδους,πρωτα τσιγαρα,σινεμα,και καφεδες,δισκους heavy metal.Ομως ο στρατος ειχε μπει μεσα μου σαν μικροβιο,πιστευω απο την στιγμη εξοδου μου απο το μητρικο αιδιο…Μια μερα μπηκα σπιτι με δυο περιοδικα.Ενα ελληνικο και ενα αγγλικο.Και τα δυο στρατιωτικα.Ο πατερας μου τα κοιταξε με σοκ και απορια.Ισως αν εφερνα περιοδικα για gay να μην παραξενευοταν τοσο(οχι μονο κανα εγκεφαλικο θα παθαινε)Τι σχεση μπορει να εχει ενας τσογλαναρας που αποβληθηκε απο ενα σχολειο,και δημιουργουσε συνεχως προβληματα στο αλλο;Που δεν ανοιγε βιβλιο και ελειπε σχεδον 24/7 απο το σπιτι.Που στα 16 τον κουβαλησαν οι μπατσοι σηκωτο μετα απο αγωνα Π.Α.Ο.Κ-Α.Ε.Κ…Που καμμια μορφη νουθεσιας και τιμωριας δεν επιανε πανω του;Που ειχε μακρυα μαλλια,ντυνοταν στα μαυρα(καλα το dressed in black μεχρι σημερα ειναι η προτιμηση μου) και η λεξη πειθαρχια ηταν αγνωστη σε αυτον…….τι δουλεια ειχε αυτος ο τυπος με το στρατο;΄Î˜Î± γινω στρατιωτικος’ του ανακοινωσα!’Με 13 γενικο;και ποτε θα γινεις στρατιωτικος;Μετα ή πριν μπεις φυλακη;’ ηταν η πατρικη απαντηση ,ε ειχε χασει καθε ελπιδα ο ανθρωπος.Περασαν μερικα χρονια απο τοτε με απιστευτες μαλακιες,με προβληματα,με ξυδια κτλ,σουτια στα γηπεδα και εκτος,ατελειωτα γουστα,κουλτουρα ‘μπρος εμεις και δε γαμεις’,ταξιδια,διακοπες,τατουαζ και σκουλαρικια(η μητηρ μολις ειδε το στολισμενο μου μπρατσο επαθε μεγαλο σοκ!!!!) και αποφασισα να καταταχθω στη Λεγεωνα των Ξενων.Παιρνοντας πληροφοριες απο τα δεκαδες στρατιωτικα βιβλια και περιοδικα αλλα και την Γαλλικη Πρεσβεια,Οκτ.του1989 παω με εναν κολλητο που ειμασταν μαζι στο πυγμαχικο του ΠΑΟΚ στο Παρισι.Μειναμε σε ενα hostel του κωλου με ελαχιστα φραγκα και κρυφα απο τους γονεις μας.Υποτιθετε ειμασταν Θασο στο εξοχικο του.Βρηκαμε το κεντρο καταταξης μετα απο πολλες προσπαθειες.Ο Στρατος κολλωσε,εκανε πισω.Και εγω μετα απο μια μερα.Οχι,οταν εφτασε η στιγμη της αληθειας κακαρισα σαν την κοτα.Φοβηθηκα;Ναι,δεν πετας την ζωη,τους γονεις κ τ αδερφια σου ετσι….Γυρισαμε πισω.Απελπισια.Ξανα στα γουστα με κολλητους μεχρι που εφτασε η ημερα να καταγω για την θητεια μου.Τι σκατα;Μερικα πραγματα ηξερα απο τα βιβλια,αλλα απο διηγησεις φιλων που ειχαν απολυθει.Πρωτη μερα στα στρατα.Κοντο μαλλι μετα απο παρα πολλα χρονια.Χακι στολες και τυφεκια FN.Φωνες και αγριαδα,τα πρωτα καψωνια ακομα με πολιτικα εμεις!Παμε σαν τα προβατα.Η κολαση επι γης.Συννεφια και κρυο.Ντυνομαστε οπως οπως με τις κολλαριστες στολες και τα αρβυλα(τοσα χρονια με τα martins τα εδεσα σε χρονο dt)Γυρω φατσες αγνωστες και απελπισμενες,οι μονιμαδες και οι παλιοι λες και τους ειχαμε γαμησει τη μανα!Φαγητο απαραδεκτο.Παγωμενος πολτος που κανονικα ηταν μακαρονια με κιμα.Αρουραιοι να τρεχουν κατω απο τα τραπεζια.Απελπισια.Αυτος ειναι ο στρατος;Περασε μια εβδομαδα,ενας παλιος με ειπε’Μην μαραζωνεις ρε νεο,σε 5 μερες θα εισαι αλλος ανθρωπος,θα κανεις μπανιο και θα καταφερεις να χεσεις θα δεις’Το χεσιμο μεγαλη υποθεση.Κανενας δεν ειχε χεσει για μερες.Τουαλετες αθλιες μερικες χωρις πορτα!Ποντικοι πεταγωταν απο τις τρυπες!Εννοειτε τουρκικες τουαλετες….Ειχε δικιο.Σε μια εβδομαδα προσαρμοστηκα πληρως.Οι πρωτοι φιλοι.Τσιγαρα,εκπαιδευση μεσα στο χιονι.Η πρωτη βολη με το FN,απολαυση.Εδω ειναι το σπιτι μου,σκεφτηκα,αυτο θελω να κανω στη ζωη μου.Επιλογη για υπαξιωματικος.Η θητεια μετα απο 15 μηνες τελειωνει.Ο προβληματικος μαθητης ηταν ενας αψογος υπαξκος!Χωρις μερα φυλακη!!!!!Μας προτεινουν να μεινουμε με 5ετια.Μερικοι δεχομαστε….Η πρωτη μερα που στην αναφορα δεν ειμαι ενοπλος!Στελεχος γαρ.Η πρωτη μερα που εβγαλα την στολη εξοδου και φορεσα την 8αρα!Περασαν 15 χρονια,δεν το μετανοιωσα λεπτο!Ομως τι ειναι ο στρατος;Γιατι εγινα στρατιωτικος;Ποτε δεν συνεδεσα τον στρατο με εννοιες οπως εθνος,σημαια,ορθοδοξια ασχετα αν αυτα ολα ειναι αναποσπαστο κομματι του στρατου.Ειμαι πρωτα Θεσσαλονικιος,μετα Μακεδονας και μετα Ελληνας,και ολα αυτα δεν τα καταφερα,γεννηθηκα με αυτες τις ιδιοτητες.Η σημαια παλι δεν με κανει να ριγω.Αμα την καινε ομως καποιοι θελω να τους δω να τρωνε γαμωξυλο.Ουτε ο εθνικος υμνος,ασχετα αν στην ορκωμοσια την ωρα που παιανισε μυρμηγκιασε για πρωτη φορα το κορμι μου.Θρησκος δεν ειμαι.Θα πεθανω για την πατριδα;Δεν θελω να πεθανω,για κανενα πουστη αλλα ετσι ειναι ο γαμωχαρακτηρας μου,δεν θα κανω πισω,μετα θα πεθανω απο ντροπη,κανενας δεν θα εγκαταλειψει τον διπλανο του.Οποιος το κανει θα πρεπει να εκτελεστει επι τοπου.Μισω τους Τουρκους;Οχι,αλλα δεν δεχομαι μαλακιες και τσαμπουκαδες.Εδω γεννηθηκα ρε καριοληδες ειτε το ηθελα ειτε οχι,αυτη ειναι η χωρα μου και οσο σκατα και αν ειναι κανενας γαμημενος δεν εχει δικαιωμα να μας απειλει.Ομως ο στρατος,το soldiering που λενε οι Αγγλοι ειναι κατι παραπανω απο την ιδεα της προασπισης μας πατριδας.Ειναι μια μυστικιστικη ελξη προς εναν σκληρο,δυσκολο,επικινδυνο τροπο ζωης.Ειναι η ζωη του στρατιωτη και του μαχητη.Διαβαστε βιβλια απο συγγραφεις που εχουν λαβει μερος σε πολεμικες συγκρουσεις.Ανεξαρτητα εποχης,χωρας,παραταξης,ιδεολογιας,θρησκειας.Απο τους αρχαιους λεγεωναριους,τους σπαρτιατες,τους φαλαγγιτες του Αλεξανδρου,τους μεσαιωνικους Ελβετους μισθοφορους,τους στρατιωτες του ΒΠΠ,τους συγχρονους SAS και μισθοφορους στη Αφρικη στα 70s και στο Ιρακ στα 00sΛες και διαβαζετε την ιδια ιστορια με τεχνικες παραλλαγες.Η ιδεα της ομαδας,η ιδεα του πολεμου,η ηδονη της μαχης,ο τρομος,η λυσσα,ο θανατος,η περηφανια.Η εκπαιδευση και ο επαγγελματισμος.Η αγαπη στα οπλα.Ολα αυτα ειναι κοινα.Ειναι η ψυχη του στρατιωτη,ειναι οι 300 του Λεωνιδα και οι σαρρισοφοροι της Φαλαγγας,ειναι οι Ρωμαιοι που πεθαιναν κρατωντας το gladius και οι αρκεβουζιοφοροι στην αναγεννηση που νοικιαζαν το σπαθι τους.Ειναι οι μυριοι του ξενοφωντας.Ειναι οι λεπτη κοκκινη γραμμη των βρετανων που κατακτησε τον κοσμο,οι στρατιωτες που εφορμουσαν στα χαρακωματα του Somme και ειναι οι Aγγλοι Τομυδες,οι Γερμανοι waffen SS,oι Σοβιετικοι αρματιστες,οι Ιαπωνες στη Ιβο Τζιμα και οκιναουα,ειναι οι Αμερικανοι Πεζοναυτες στον ειρηνικο και οι Rangers στη Νορμανδια.Ειναι οι ελληνες πεζικαριοι στη Αλβανια,στο Ελ Αλαμειν και στη Κορεα,ειναι οι green berets στο Βιετναμ και οι special forces και navy seals στο Αφγανισταν,ειναι οι marines στη Φαλουτζα και οι μουσουλμανοι ανταρτες,ειναι οι Βρετανοι SAS και Paras στα Φωκλαντς.Γαμα πατριδες,σημαιες και ιδεολογιες.Ειναι η ηδονη της μαχης και η τιμη της στολης και του οπλου.Ειναι η τιμη να πολεμας διπλα σε αξιους.Και οπως
